Make it Yours: The Parts of GQT6
2026-01-27
The latest, greatest (and final) GQT6 is available from January 27th. This last, most comprehensive, and most refined edition of the all-things-Wndsn book shall conclude the evolution of ever thicker manuals that have long become textbooks and study guides with hundreds of cross references, footnotes, a large glossary, as well as a rich bibliography.
In other words, GQT6 might be nice to own and display on a shelf, but it’s also a scary and overwhelming read. To drive home the point that you don’t have to read this book (and any book for that matter) from cover to cover, I suggest to make it bite-sized.
GQT6 comprises seven parts
- History: Wndsn Quadrant Telemeters
- The Telemeter
- The (Surveying) Quadrant
- Astronomy: Mastery of Time and Space
- The Astronomical Quadrant
- The Sine Quadrant
- Reference: Appendix
You may only be interested in the Telemeter part, or the Astronomical Quadrant part, or the Sine Quadrant part, or the appendix with the useful tables (compare the full table of contents).
Somewhere in the new GQT6, I recommend to divide the book into parts and discard or save the parts you don’t immediately need for when you have some downtime, or are trapped sheltering in place somewhere without electricity.
I meant this quite literally, to cut the book into parts. Now, I grew up in a family of books, and books are holy and should be treated with respect (compare the last page in GQT5 or 6). This doesn’t mean that we should make life unnecessarily hard for ourselves. Make it yours, cut it up (and send me pictures, please!), but don’t let it intimidate you. If you want a souvenir edition, buy two, one for the shelf, and one to fulfill your exact needs.
Alternatively, get the e-book edition, which is already pared down by about 250 pages to contain just the instrument parts.
Acquire GQT6 in print or as an e-book on Amazon or by using the ISBN (979-8243846523) to order it at your local bookstore. Also available in German.
